Neighborhood Witness

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

--- Jesus (Acts 1:8)

Each spring and fall, our neighborhood witnessing teams visit homes near the church and/or near their own homes to reach out to and share God’s love with our neighbors.  At each home we visit, we offer families a pocket Bible, a pamphlet about beginning and developing a personal relationship with Jesus, and a brochure with information about the Middletown United Methodist Church – our worship services, fellowship activities, educational and youth programs, and our commitment to local, national, and international ministries.  We talk for as little or as long as each visit warrants, and we warmly invite any who do not already have a church home to come and join us for worship on any Sunday they wish, and/or to attend any upcoming special events.

To date, the teams have visited over 300 homes in our area.  Responses from those we’ve met have ranged from courteous to genuinely appreciative.  Some have told us of friends or relatives they want to give the materials we’ve provided; others have shared something of their personal situations with us, allowing us to further encourage them to begin or renew their relationship with Christ through the church.

But in truth, our focus is not on how people respond, but rather on faithfully living out our Lord’s command to love our neighbors and to be His witnesses in the world around us.  We know that “neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow” (1 Corinthians 3:7).  We pray and trust that God will indeed give the increase as He wills in the hearts of those we’ve encountered.  And we praise and thank Him for the special peace and joy He gives when we are about His work of reaching out in love to invite others to Him.

"However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me – the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace.”

--- Paul (Acts 20:24)
